Navy Pier Gets Spooky: Your Halloween Weekend Plan

Free daytime activities and indoor films give Streeterville neighbors several ways to celebrate October 31.

Streeterville neighbors do not have to travel far for a Halloween outing. Navy Pier’s October 31 program combines daytime activities with evening movies, making it possible to build a short visit or spend several hours at the lakefront.

The important planning detail is that the day changes character as it goes on. Candy stops and creative activities arrive first; a classic supernatural comedy and a later adult horror movie follow. Families should choose a time window that fits their children rather than treating every part of the schedule as the same kind of entertainment.

Start with the daytime plans

According to the official TV Slightly Spooky October schedule, indoor trick-or-treating begins at 11 a.m., while candy supplies last. A dance workshop and performance runs from 1 to 3 p.m., mask making from 1 to 4 p.m., and a costume contest from 3 to 5 p.m.

That gives visitors a choice: arrive early for the candy stops, come later for an activity, or make the costume contest the centerpiece of the afternoon. Check the organizer’s latest schedule before leaving home, because individual activities may have their own participation details.

Two films, two different audiences

The separate movie listing places the screenings inside Crystal Gardens. Short films start at 5 p.m., followed by Ghostbusters at 5:30 p.m. and Halloween (1978) at 7:30 p.m. The later feature is an adult horror selection; parents should check film ratings and decide what suits their household.

The organizer recommends bringing a blanket or chair. Food and snacks can be purchased from Pier businesses. The movie program is listed as free, but that does not make parking, food or paid attractions free. Decide which parts of the outing you actually want before adding extras.

A lakefront visit with an indoor option

Navy Pier’s October seasonal announcement describes an autumn calendar extending into November. It also notes that the Centennial Wheel has enclosed, climate-controlled gondolas, while some other attractions depend on weather. Those rides are separate from the free Halloween program.

For a neighborhood outing, the indoor screening location is useful: you can plan around a specific film instead of assuming the evening requires an extended outdoor stay. Still check conditions for the walk or ride to the Pier. The address is 600 E. Grand Avenue, and all event times here are Chicago local time.

Our suggestion is to pick one main attraction and leave room around it. An afternoon activity followed by an early film may be easier to enjoy than trying to do every item on the list.
